These apt words by Steve Jobs, beautifully answer the very fundamental question that all parents ask – can learning how to code make my kid’s future extraordinary?
Today’s kids are born with a knack for technology. Their propensity to learn the workings of new gadgets, even at an age as small as 3 years, baffles their parents and even more, their grand-parents. So, will learning how to code be such a difficult task for them?
Many early childhood pedagogy experts believe that Coding is the language of the 21st century. Coding is the new literacy measure of this century because the new age humans will be living on digital platforms. It holds the same significance for our future generation as reading and writing skills holds for ours. Hence, learning how to code can definitely make your kid’s future extraordinary.
There are even more compelling reasons for learning how to code in early childhood education. This skill, learnt in early years of education has been associated with developing a mathematical and scientific way of thinking in children by researchers. It also helps them evolve their problem-solving capabilities which make them better citizens of tomorrow’s complex world which is bound to have much more perplexing issues than ours. When a child is learning how to code, s/he has to give directions to the computer without using language words, which needs to be precise and as per coding rules. This helps the child evolve his/her communication skills.
But wait! So far, we have focused on only one facet of coding – its impact on cognitive amelioration in children. These intellectually proficient children will grow up to be maestros of digital world purely because of the edge they got over others who did not think that learning how to code can open a new path for them which leads to an extra ordinary future. Not only on themselves, these new-age adults will make a significant impact on the culture and society of the future. They will be producers of innovative and useful technology and not just its users. Don’t we already know that producers generally have a higher financial advantage in society than consumers?
And then we have to look at the growing needs of the economy? Most advanced countries have analysed the manpower need for computer related jobs and have already incorporated coding and computer science in their K-12 school curriculum. This fervour to incorporate coding in early childhood education has been accentuated by the estimates made by various statistical experts about the need for computer related jobs in the coming years. For example, the Bureau of Labour Statistics has estimated a need for 1.7 million computer-related jobs in the US over the next 10 years. Is this not a compelling reason enough to ensure that our children are learning how to code for their extra ordinary future.
Nevertheless, learning how to code is not just for the economic and financial advantage in the coming century. Everyone who learns reading and writing does not turn out becoming a writer. Similarly, everyone learning coding does not necessarily have to become a coder. It is more about developing a methodical way of thinking which learning how to code encourages. Literacy in any era of the society, is the key to expressing our ideas and being part of the decision- making process of its highest echelons. This new era literacy holds the same power which our educated ancestors had enjoyed while building the society as we see today. And hence, you can confidently say that learning how to code can definitely make your kid’s future extraordinary.
